NEVILLE HALL
Neville Hall studied composition at Auckland University with John Rimmer and John Elmsly. In 1992, he furthered his studies in Europe, where he attended the composition class of Franco Donatoni and the 12th Summer Course for Young Composers in Kazimierz, Poland, where the panel of composers included Witold Lutoslawski. Later, in 1997, he participated in Brian Ferneyhoughs composition class at the International Bartók Seminar in Szombathely, Hungary.
Since 1993 Neville has lived in Ljubljana, Slovenia, returning to New Zealand for six months in 1995 to take up the position of Composer-in-Residence with Chamber Music New Zealand. He has enjoyed a number of commissions and performances in Europe, New Zealand and Australia, including performances at several European new music festivals.
In 1994 he was awarded the CANZ Trust Fund Award by the Composers Association of New Zealand. The same year he received a Menzione d'onore in the 16th Concorso Internazionale Luigi Russolo, Varese, Italy, for Reflexive, a 1991 work for alto saxophone and tape. In 1995 he was awarded First Prize in the 2nd International Competition for Choral Composition of the APZ Tone Tomsic Choir, Ljubljana, Slovenia for Mir and in 2001 his silence rain down, quenching time's fire for large orchestra, was selected to represent Slovenia in the Paris International Rostrum of Composers.
